The Farm

Our vision is for Nubanusit Farm to be a small biodynamic farm offering organic produce, dairy products, meat and eggs for the neighbors and possibly others. Neighbors may participate in the Farm depending on their individual desires and the farm needs, though participation is not required. Our fields include a three acre vegetable field, two pastures (approx. eight acres each) and a seven acre hay field.

The Equestrian Farm is well established with a horse barn and riding arena, and three horses - Magic, Squirt, and Jimmy Joe.

Shelley Goguen Hulbert, a neighbor and experienced dairy farmer, has in residence her two milk cows, Magnolia and Pumpkin, both of which have provided milk since October, and neighbors volunteer with the milking, barn, and kitchen duties, including making yogurt. Both cows delivered calves in the fall much to the delight of the neighborhood.

As of early March, we have begun seeding indoors, and have an established plan for a seasonal vegetable garden, as well as for using the beds we created in 2009 for perennial vegetables and berries. We have contracted with a biodynamic vegetable farmer to guide the neighborhood CSA, and to actively manage the farm. Here is related information:

Hoop House Update

Great News - Our hoop house grant application was approved!

Financial assistance from the USDA/Natural Resources Conservation Service will allow us to construct a hoop house aka 'high-tunnel greenhouse' of significant size.

A hoop house functions like a green house, moderating the extremes of temperature in a temperate climate. It will extend the growing season significantly in spring and in the fall, and should permit us to grow out-of-season vegetables as well.

In the coming weeks, we will be begin work on selecting the optimum site on the farm, finalizing the specifications, and ordering it.
